Clinical Massage Therapy.
Clinical Massage therapy is a highly specialized health care modality
that focuses on both the evaluation and the treatment of soft
tissue dysfunction through manual manipulation. The purpose of
clinical massage therapy is to develop, maintain, rehabilitate,
or augment the physical function of the Massage patient.
Clinical
massage is a type of massage that focuses on Fascia or Connective
tissue, which is where injuries to muscle tend to show up first.
Fascia is the complex soft tissue webbing which holds us all together.
It is normally a very thin, moist layer of connective tissue which
is wrapped around muscles, around individual muscle fibres allowing
them to slide over one another. When muscle tissue is over stretched,
the fascia that binds or connects them will also be overstretched
and will tear. This will create scar tissue which can bind the
fascia to adjacent structures. It doesn’t have to be as
catastrophic as a torn muscle, even micro tears heal with scar
tissue which isn’t as strong or as pliable as the tissue
it replaces. While the adhesions and scar tissue lack the structural
integrity of healthy muscle tissue they are still enervated by
nerves and blood vessels which can cause pain. Overuse can cause
the fascia to thicken and harden, preventing muscle fibres moving
and causing pain.
Clinical
Massage enables the clinician to evaluate effectively, treat and
prevent soft tissue injuries. The deep penetrating technique makes
it possible to break down adhesions between: muscle fibres, between
muscle and its surrounding fascia and if fascia is situated between
muscle groups, between muscle and bone, tendons and tendon sheaths.
Skin that has become tethered due to scaring, post injury or surgery
can be effectively mobilized too.
The
benefits of clinical massage therapy include:
· Promotion of the healing process
· Increase in metabolism
· Improvement in circulation
· Enhancement in joint and muscle function
