  Clinical Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis can be simply described as an ‘altered state of awareness’. We all naturally go into an altered state when we drive home without remembering anything of the journey, much like being on automatic pilot, or when we forget we have a headache when distracted by something interesting on television. Hypnosis just utilises this ‘altered state’ on a deeper level. It is perfectly natural and safe as it is something we can already do ourselves.

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for the treatment and relief of a variety of medical and psychological symptoms. As opposed to ‘stage hypnosis’ which is purely for entertainment, Clinical Hypnosis is used solely in a therapeutic setting for the benefit of you, the patient.

How does it Work?

Our minds work on two levels –conscious and unconscious. With our conscious mind we make decisions, think and act. The unconscious controls all our automatic functions, such as breathing, walking, driving etc. and is where our beliefs, habits and behaviours are stored. As we relax, we release ourselves from conscious awareness (the normal ‘alert’ state), and can access directly the unconscious part of ourselves in order to make deep and lasting changes to thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

What will happen when I’m hypnotised?

Contrary to popular belief, there is NO LOSS OF CONTROL, neither will you be made to do or say anything you don’t want to. In fact, the opposite is true. Hypnotherapy is a co-operative partnership in that the therapist is simply guiding you into doing something you already know how to do - whether you are aware of it or not!

Whilst similar to natural sleep in that you become very relaxed and your breathing and pulse rate slow down, you are not actually asleep. You will be aware of sounds around you and you will hear most of what the therapist is saying .You will always naturally come out of hypnosis, just like you would naturally wake up from sleep. It is impossible to ‘get stuck’.
