FAQ’s

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis can be simply described as an ‘altered state of awareness’. We all naturally go into an altered state when we drive home without remembering anything of the journey, much like being on automatic pilot, or when we forget we have a headache when distracted by something interesting on television. Hypnosis just utilises this ‘altered state’ on a deeper level. It is perfectly natural and safe as it is something we can already do ourselves.

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for the treatment and relief of a variety of medical and psychological symptoms. As opposed to ‘stage hypnosis’ which is purely for entertainment, Clinical Hypnosis is used solely in a therapeutic setting for the benefit of you, the patient.

How does hypnosis work?
Our minds work on two levels – the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious controls all our automatic functions, such as breathing, walking, driving etc. and is where our beliefs, habits and behaviours are stored. As we relax, we release ourselves from conscious awareness (the normal ‘alert’ state), and can access directly the unconscious part of ourselves in order to make deep and lasting changes to thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

What will happen when I’m hypnotised?
Contrary to popular belief, there is NO LOSS OF CONTROL, neither will you be made to do or say anything you do not wish to. In fact, the opposite is true. Hypnotherapy is a co-operative partnership in that the therapist is simply guiding you into doing something you already know how to do.

Whilst similar to natural sleep in that you become very relaxed and your breathing and pulse rate slow down, you are not actually asleep. You will be aware of sounds around you and you will hear most of what the therapist is saying .You will always naturally come out of hypnosis, just like you would naturally wake up from sleep. It is impossible to ‘get stuck’.

What can hypnotherapy help with?
It is medically accepted as being beneficial for:-

  • Breaking unwanted habits e.g. smoking, nail biting, stammering.
  • Freedom from fears and phobias, compulsions, panic attacks, depression, emotional problems, inhibitions, lack of confidence, blushing, performance anxieties e.g. exam /driving test nerves, interviews, public speaking and other general anxieties of everyday life
  • Relief from many medical conditions (often where conventional medicine has been unsuccessful) e.g. skin conditions and nervous rashes, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), bruxism (teeth grinding), dystonia (nervous tic), insomnia
  • Help to move on from bereavement, trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Effective for weight control, eating disorders, healthy eating – helping to make positive, behavioural lifestyle changes
  • Increasing work/ study/ sports performance, improving concentration, boosting self-confidence and achieving more of the potential, which we each possess.
  • Pain control for minor surgery, dentistry and general neuromuscular aches and pains, tension headaches and migraine.
  • Stress management, general relaxation and well-being

What is EMDR?
'Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing' is a modern therapy developed since 1987 and uses eye movements to help rapidly process traumatic or upsetting past events. It is particularly renowned in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When disturbing events occur, the brain’s normal information processing system can become blocked or imbalanced. It is thought that eye movements stimulate the processing ability, much like REM sleep when we dream, helping to shift any psychological or emotional blockage, naturally promoting the assimilation and healing of negative emotional experiences.

What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Technique involves tapping on the energy meridians of the body, in order to reduce emotional and psychological distress. When we perceive a situation to be threatening, a message is sent to the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for identifying threat, and the ‘Fight or Flight ‘ response is triggered resulting in physiological symptoms of fear such as increased heart rate, sweating, shaking etc. It is believed that EFT works by interrupting the messages alerting the brain of danger, dramatically reducing anxiety symptoms.

What is NLP?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is based on the idea that we experience the world through our senses and translate this sensory information into thought processes, both conscious and unconscious. These thought processes affect our physiology, emotions and behaviour. Using NLP techniques, we can quickly and effectively recode our experiences, therefore changing the resulting physiology, emotions and subsequently behaviour.
