Complementary therapies, Alternative medicine, integrative medicine, holistic therapies - these are a few of the terms used nowadays to describe a wide array of healing practices that fall outside purely pharmaceutical or surgical treatments. Some examples are: Variations of massage, Shiatsu, Reflexology, acupuncture, Nutrition, allergy elimination the list is endless.
Whether you call it complementary therapies or alternative medicine, it refers to the same thing--a wide array of healing practices that fall outside purely pharmaceutical or surgical treatments. Complementary therapies are also well named because their purpose is often to help maintain wellness and promote health. In other words, they act to complement your health.
Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning 'finger pressure'. In practice, it combines various techniques, such as stretching, rocking and holding, with pressure (which may be applied using thumbs, fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, feet and knees). As a complete system of healing through touch, it draws extensively on key aspects of Traditional Oriental Medicine and many of the techniques are applied to the same energy channels and points used in acupuncture. Shiatsu is carried out fully clothed on a futon at floor level and can be physically dynamic or extremely gentle, depending on individual requirements.
Traditional Chinese and Five-Element Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional medicine which has been used in the East for thousands of years to restore, promote and maintain good health. Taking a holistic approach, acupuncture regards illness as a sign that the body is out of balance, the exact pattern and degree of imbalance being unique to each individual. By inserting fine needles into the meridians beneath the skin, acupuncture stimulates the body's own healing response. Acupuncture can be effective treatment for many conditions, including gastro-intestinal, skin, respiratory and musculo-skeletal – in May 2009 NICE recommended acupuncture for back pain relief. Acupuncture and Acupressure Massage are also very effective treatments for depression.
